Spy No More

The good news is that you can avoid spyware. Here's how:

Before you download free software, read the license agreement carefully. Very often, part of the deal is that you accept spyware as the price for using the software. If this is not acceptable to you, don't download it.

Make sure your computer has a firewall.

Be wary of sites that offer pirated programs. The same holds true for adult sites that offer free content. These sites are spyware magnets!

Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Mozilla Firefox web browsers have security settings that restrict spyware from being installed. Make sure the security level is set to at least medium (the default setting).

Keep your operating system and web browsers up-to-date. Both Microsoft and Apple provide periodic product updates.
