16. Is there anything I should know when I'm in a chat room?

Chats can be great fun, but always use common sense.

Because you are just typing messages and can't really see the person you're talking to, you never know who he or she really is. Sometimes kids make up things that aren't true. A girl might say she's a boy or visa versa and who would know?

Remember that everything you say is public. Even if you think that there is only one other kid in a chat room, other kids can be lurking.

Don't give out any personal information to strangers you meet on the Internet-certainly not your address, phone number, or your parents' credit card numbers.

While meeting kids online can be an adventure, it's no substitute for making friends in the real world. So give your computer a rest--go outside and play for a while!
