13. How can I send e-mail to my friend?

The @ sign Just like with letters, you need the correct e-mail address for the message to be delivered. If you use the wrong address or mistype it, your message bounces back to you, along with an explanation of why the message was returned.

Internet e-mail addresses usually have two main parts:

professor@learnthenet.com

First, there is the user name (professor) that refers to the recipient's mailbox. Then there's that funny @ sign, called an axon. Next comes the domain name (learnthenet.com). This refers to the mail server, the computer where the recipient has an electronic mailbox.

Let's say you want to e-mail the President of the United States. You would send mail to:

president@whitehouse.gov

(Remember that .gov stands for government and is used by government agencies and officials.)

For e-mail addresses outside of the United States, there is often a [DOT] followed by two letters representing the country. For instance, .ca is for Canada, and .mx is for Mexico.

Don't forget that an e-mail address and the address of a website are different:

E-mail address: professor@learnthenet.com
Website address: http://www.learnthenet.com
